Pruning is like a hair cut for your tree. In some cases, it's done for the overall health of the tree, sometimes for aesthetics. (trees like to look sexy too!) However, a lot of it is done for wind reduction. During a storm, this helps the wind pass through easier, and mother-nature willing, keeps the tree from suffering any damage and causing a Wizard of Oz remake.
